Our dauntless dating reporter asks: What do you check first when you're looking at someone's dating profile?
![]() |
Susan, 44, Clifton, Virginia When I look at someone's profile, I look at the pictures to see if there is an attraction. In addition, I look at their job and place a great deal of importance on what they say in their profile. The way a person writes is as important to me as the content of their profile. What someone chooses to reveal about himself tells as much about him as the words he chooses to write. |

Alex, 31, Washington, D.C. Photos, then the narrative for substance (and good grammar!), then age, and finally the laundry list of other details/characteristics. |

Monica, 27, Orlando, Florida I look at the pictures first. I think most people do. I don't look at profiles without pictures.

Paul, 33, Los Angeles, California Probably location, then physical stats (call me shallow). |

Jabu, 33, Seattle, Washington I always look at the title, the age and then the picture. I have to admit I'm a visual person too! Then I read the profile, I'm very attracted to intelligence so I love well-written, funny descriptions. Profiles that describe how much money a person makes or the kind of car they drive are a total turn off. I also check to see that the person has listed my ethnicity as an interest, often times they list their only interest as "white" which obviously isn't me! |

Francisco, 26, Pontiac, Michigan Pictures are very important. You will not catch my attention if I can't see who I'm interacting with. |

Elaunda, 34, Lithonia, Georgia When I first look at someone's profile, I check their height and pictures. I need to know that I am physically attractive to the person. Then I can move on to the rest of the profile. |

Michael, 37, Lockport, New York A big smile. Then I check if they smoke. |

Shannon, 36, Akron, Ohio I will admit the first thing I check in viewing someone's profile is their photo. I'm not shallow, it's just that I like to know if I have a physical attraction to him. Secondly, I look for a sense of humor in their profile. That is so important. And third, I look for distance, like how far they live from me. I hope it's not far because it is really bad when you meet a nice man and you are in Ohio and he lives in California! |

Andy, 29, Joliet, Ill. A photo, it is the most important thing. She must be smiling in her photo. I want to be with a girl who likes to smile and laugh a lot. |

Sylvia, 37, Kingsville, Texas Without sounding shallow, their photo, their height, location and religious status. It's important for me to find someone who's compatible with me not only physically and emotionally but also spiritually. |

Tim, 41, Springtown, Texas People search for differing topics. I've kept fairly steady with age and at what stage people are in their careers and life. |
||

Wendy, 35, Lawrence, Kansas When I was searching, I looked for a good description. The shorter the paragraph, the less I was interested in reading it. Take the time to really look at yourself and describe who you are! By the way, word to the wise to the men, don't waste space in the paragraph saying "umm, I'm 5'10" with brown hair and a good build." You've already described your physical features in the "About Me" section of your profile! |
||

Josh, 25, North Wales, Pennsylvania I check distance and then usually the "About Me" section. there has to be something different there that separates the person from the rest.td>

Christopher, 32, New York, New York Whether I match the items in their "What I'm looking for" section. Next I check to see if the items in that section are too generic, or they don't have much text to describe themselves. These can be a huge turn offs because it can mean they haven't taken time to figure out what they want. That's not sexy. |
